In developing the full line of Classic Equine Bits, we worked with dozens of the industry’s top horse trainers. The basic styles of shanks and mouthpieces of our collection encompass the tried and true, time-tested designs that have been used for decades. Welcome to our complete bitting system. Included below are the essential bits that you can find in most every professional’s tack room. Many of the shank styles can be found in stainless steel, or browned iron, and our historic best sellers can be found in the new rasp shanks for an even better feel.
Shank Options
O Ring
The O Ring Snaffle is a must for any horseman’s toolbox. It is the most commonly used piece of equipment by trainers of all disciplines, for everything from starting colts to softening older performance horses. Use it to introduce a horse to a bit for the first time, teach a horse to follow his nose, lateral flexion exercises and drills, establish proper headset or soften older horses. The O Ring has a weighted feel for greater sensation during the pickup and release of pressure.
D Ring
A necessity in any horseman’s toolbox, the D Ring Snaffle has a nice weight, balance, and feel. Its slightly heavier design not only makes it durable, but it takes a deliberate action to cue the horse. When released, the bit returns quickly to a resting state, providing release of pressure and adding consistency to your hands.
D Ring Gag
Ring gag with an inlaid copper twisted wire snaffle mouthpiece. The gag action encourages the horse to respond before the bit is completely engaged. Gags are commonly used in training and competing in all western events. Available in a 5" and 6.5”, the gag action helps elevate the horse's shoulders and soften the cues for smooth transitions.
6" Shank
The 6" cheek has a 2-1/2" purchase and a 3-1/2" shank. This ratio (the difference in the length of the purchase and shank) and the swept-back design of the shank make this a mild cheek. Contact with the horse’s mouth comes slowly in the form of soft pressure to all points of contact. The main point of contact is the corners of the mouth, which is a familiar spot from the O Ring. This bit may also be used with a training fork or martingale to encourage collection and poll control.
7-1/2" Shank
The 7-1/2" cheek style is next in the lineup. Extremely versatile, this bit can be used for training drills, pleasure riding, or competition. This cheek has a 2-1/2" purchase with a 5" shank. The shank is swept back, like the 6" model, but to a lesser degree, which offers more leverage and control. When properly adjusted, it is still considered a mild cheek, but one with plenty of leverage for control at increased speeds.
8" Cavalry Shank
This final cheek is designed for the finished performance horse or tough-mouthed older horses where more control is needed. It can be used as a schooling bit to get a horse that is not responding to milder bits to collect and break at the poll. It is also often used in competition, and should not be used for daily training. The purchase is 2-1/2" and the shank 5-1/2". The Cavalry designed shank is angled back to the horse, but at a straighter angle than the 7-1/2" model, causing a quicker, more immediate response. The purchase/shank alignment ratio increases leverage, creating greater realized pressure to all points of contact.
Snaffle
The mouthpiece is inlaid with copper to stimulate salivation. The mouthpiece is 5-1/8" wide, 3/8" in diameter, and curved to shape to the corner of the mouth for soft, evenly distributed pressure to the bars, tongue, and corners of the mouth. The Snaffle is the softest of all shank bit styles. Transition bit for colts moving up from the O Ring. Soft pressure is applied through the curb. Available in O-Ring, D-Ring, Ring Gag, 6" and 7.5" Shanks.
Twisted Wire
3/8” x 5” Steel Mouthpiece is designed for training, and general riding. Provides greater sensitivity and control. Available in only the O-Ring and D-Ring Shank.
Small Smooth Snaffle
5” Steel Mouthpiece is designed for training, softening your horse’s mouth, and building sensitivity. Available in only the D-Ring Shank.
Square Snaffle
5” Steel Mouthpiece is designed for training, softening your horse’s mouth and building sensitivity. Provides a step up in feel from the small smooth snaffle Available in only the D-Ring Shank.
DogBone
The dogbone mouthpiece wraps the tongue when pressure is applied. Pressure is also realized on the chin from the curb strap to the bars and corners of the mouth. This bit works well on well-broke young horses or light-mouthed older horses. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Chain
The Chain has a stainless-steel cheek with an inlaid copper chain mouthpiece. Good tool for reiterating bend and flex. Mild and pinch-less sweet iron mouthpiece is comfortable and applies even pressure to the corners of the mouth and tongue. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Low Port Barrel
The Low Port Barrel is a highly universal bit that works well for anything from training to pleasure riding to competition. When engaged, the low port provides tongue relief as slight pressure is applied to the bars of the mouth and to the palate. Each side works independently from the port for increased lateral flexion. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Short Correction
The mouthpiece is inlaid with copper to stimulate salivation. The mouthpiece is 5-1/8" wide, 3/8" in diameter, and the short port provides tongue relief and works off of the edges of the tongue as well. It is hinged for increased flexibility and distributed pressure to the bars, and corners of the mouth. Soft feel with added control most horses are comfortable with. Only available in 6" Shanks.
Square Hinge Port
Side of the mouth move independently for lateral control and flexion for lifting the shoulder, achieving collection, and promoting a level headset. Only available in 8" Calvary Shanks.
Correction
The Correction is extremely popular with performance riders and trainers. Taller port creates more palate pressure. Mouthpiece wraps the mouth, applying increased pressure to the sides of the tongue. Designed for finished, well-broke horses of all disciplines. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Floating Spade
The Floating Spade has a stainless steel cheek with inlaid copper floating spade mouthpiece. The mouthpiece wraps over the tongue with applied pressure. This is a great bit to introduce a horse to palate pressure as you transition to ported bits and taller corrections. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Ported
Inlaid Copper mouthpiece with higher port increases degree of contact with the palate, offering tongue relief with a 1-1/2” width. For collection and control on a finished horse. Only available in 8" Calvary Shanks.
Ported Chain
The Ported Chain has a stainless steel cheek with an inlaid copper ported chain mouthpiece. This unique mouthpiece allows for tongue relief while providing flex and bend. It also encourages the horse to break at the poll. Ideal for finished, well-broke horses. Only available in 7.5" Shanks.
Ported Twisted Wire
Advanced Bit applies pressure to all parts of the mouth and sides of the tongue. Side pieces move independently with enhanced leverage and lift from the twisted wire mouthpiece. This is designed for stop and collection for advanced competitors. Available in 7.5" or 8" Calvary Shanks.
1 x 1-3/4 Correction
Applies increased pressure to all parts of the mouth and sides of the tongue. Used to school horses that need to be reminded of stopping and collection. Only available in 8" Calvary Shanks.
