Shank Options
7-1/2" LOOSE CHEEK SHANK
The sliding action of the loose-cheek shank is forgiving enough for heavier hands or quicker signals without sacrificing control. The shank works the port when the jerk line is engaged to get the horse back, and it releases pressure when the line releases. This design helps make up ground in horsemanship so the roper can focus on the calf.
Key Features:
· 7 ½-inch loose-cheek shank
· Loose, sliding cheek allows direct leverage
· Copper dots add a timeless look
7-1/2" SHANK
The 7 ½-inch shanks maximize the jerk line and provide leverage to help a horse get back once the calf is roped. The sliding action at the connection to the mouthpiece offers forgiveness, making it a shank suitable for any level of roper, even those with quick or heavy hands.
Key Features:
· 7 ½-inch shank
· Copper dots add a timeless look
8" Shank
The longer shank provides maximum jerk-line action in your tie-down horse. Choose this shank for your seasoned tie-down horse to get the most response. It’s also suitable for a roper with light hands and can help compensate for a roper’s smaller size or slighter strength on a harder-mouthed horse. The sliding action offers forgiveness and direct leverage. This design helps make up ground in horsemanship so the roper can focus on the calf.
Key Features:
· 8-inch shank
· Maximum jerk-line action
· Copper dots add a timeless look
Mouthpiece Options
LOW PORT
This universal bit is great for responsive horses who don’t need a lot of signal. It’s also helpful for youth and beginner ropers who aren’t yet light with their hands. The mouthpiece is wide, so it easily fits without extra tongue pressure. This design helps make up ground in horsemanship so the roper can focus on the calf.
“With the low-port mouthpiece, your horse will run into the bit, like you want, but he’ll stay in your hand for control,” Beaver explains. “The mouthpiece’s slide action on the shank keeps the horse’s front end up and the rear end down, so he can run and stop easier.”
Key Features:
· Low port
· Good for soft-mouthed horses
· Forgiving, even in heavy hands
HIGH PORT
The perfect mouthpiece for your veteran tie-down horse, this bit aims to provide more control in the box. The high port gives a noticeable signal for older horses that might be less responsive to a lower mouthpiece to achieve rate and control. It also helps young and novice ropers with their jerk line. This design helps make up ground in horsemanship so the roper can focus on the calf.
“This bit is designed off an old bit we called the Prime Time,” Beaver explains. “The port lets you get the whoa you need in the tie-down or breakaway roping, but it’s also forgiving enough that the horse will go forward.”
Key Features:
· High port
· Works well for ropers with light hands
· Get the whoa you need without losing forward motion
HIGH PORT WITH LOOSE CHEEK
Designed with the tie-down roper in mind, this mouthpiece pushes the horse’s mouth into the roper’s hands to maximize the jerk line’s function. It offers more control on a horse that drops in the front and helps keep the horse’s weight shifted to the hind end. This mouthpiece is forgiving for the sensitive horse, and therefore is a good choice for a youth or novice roper. This design helps make up ground in horsemanship so the roper can focus on the calf.
“This is my go-to on almost any calf horse,” Beaver shares. “It keeps the horse’s head up where he can see where he’s going coming out of the box, instead of tucked too much or cocking off to the side. The port is high, but the slide action offers forgiveness. It’s an all-time favorite of mine and has been to the NFR quite a few times.”
Key Features:
· High port
· Loose cheek
· Slide action offers forgiveness and leverage
